Drilling a Well

The Washington State Department of Ecology regulates well drilling for both individual and public water systems. Their Homeowner's Guide to Well Construction provides detailed information on the process.

Digging a Well CartoonWells must be drilled by a licensed well driller. Check the Department of Ecology's Well Construction and Licensing page or see a List of Well Drillers (PDF) in Clallam County. Your well driller will manage the permitting process for you, completing the application and getting approval from the Department of Ecology.

If your well driller does not give you a copy of your well log after the well is drilled, we suggest that you request one from them.

Water Testing Laboratory

We provide water testing services and suggest that you have your water tested after your well is completed.

If the well is drilled as part of a construction project (new home or commercial building) in Clallam County, Well site Verification & Water Availability is required as part of the permit process.  Projects inside the Dungeness Water Rule area will be required to abide by all requirements therein through the Dungeness Water Exchange program managed by the Department of Ecology.

Decommissioning an Existing Well

A well driller is required to properly Decommission an existing well.

If your well goes dry and a replacement well must be drilled a copy of the Notice of Intent for Well Abandonment from Department of Ecology will be required to complete the approval process for the new source of potable water.  Find details on Department of Ecology's Well Abandonment page.
