Therapeutic Courts

Clallam County District Court I is committed to providing a therapeutic and restorative approach for eligible individuals involved in the justice system. By addressing the underlying causes of criminal behavior such as mental health challenges or substance use disorders. These specialized courts aim to reduce recidivism, promote long-term recovery, and enhance community safety.

Mental Health Court:

Established in 2022 within District Court I, the Clallam County Mental Health Court is a collaborative initiative designed to address the needs of individuals in the criminal justice system who are living with mental health challenges

The program is a partnership among participants, the Court, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Clallam Public Defender, and local mental health and treatment providers. Together, they work to promote recovery, accountability, and public safety through a treatment-focused alternative to traditional prosecution.

Goals of the Mental Health Court

  1. Reduce recidivism by providing assessment, education, and treatment for defendants with qualifying mental health diagnoses.
  2. Promote long-term recovery and stability through participant accountability, incentives, and appropriate sanctions.
  3. Offer an effective alternative to traditional prosecution and incarceration by reallocating resources toward treatment and support.
  4. Reduce costs and system burdens associated with prosecution, incarceration, and hospitalization.
  5. Enhance community safety and well-being.
  6. Improve participants’ quality of life through access to services and structured support.
  7. Strengthen collaboration and communication between the mental health system and the criminal justice system.

Our Mental Health Court serves participants within the 6% of the US population who are diagnosed with a serious mental illness.
